Why Do I Have Low Water Pressure in My Home?
Few things are more frustrating than taking a shower with low water pressure. Read on for some reasons why you may have low water pressure.

There are a few things more frustrating than stepping in the shower in the morning only to find that you have low water pressure. While some of the causes of this plumbing issue are benign and out of your hands, others require swift action to avoid permanent damage to your property. What are some of the reasons why you might be experiencing low water pressure?

There Is a Problem in Your Neighborhood

One of the most common causes of low water pressure is a utility company doing work in the area. Before you panic over your water pressure, contact your water supplier to see if there are any known issues with the neighborhood’s water. If you are in touch with your neighbors, you can also ask them if they are noticing anything irregular.

You Haven’t Opened the Shutoff Valve Fully

Did you recently return from vacation? Have you recently performed plumbing work at the house? Check the main shutoff valve for your home. One cause of low water pressure is failing to open it back up completely after turning it off. However, if the water pressure issues occur and you have not had work performed recently or been out of town, that is probably not the culprit.

The Pressure Regulator Is Not Working

All houses do not have pressure regulators, but many of them do. A pressure regulator is one way to avoid the water pressure in your pipes being so high that it does damage to your plumbing. However, the pressure regulator can fail after many years of use, and while it is failing you might experience irregularly high or low water pressure. A plumber can evaluate your pressure regulator and make a replacement for you.

You Have a Pipe Problem

One of the more serious causes of low water pressure is an issue with your pipes. A clogged pipe, corroded pipe, or burst pipe could make it so that your plumbing fixtures are not getting enough water. If you have ruled out everything else, it’s a good idea to call a plumber to see if a pipe might be the culprit.
