While the weather outside is still fairly warm, it won’t be long until the fall season is upon us. As temperatures drop, it’ll become more important to have a functional water heater for your house. After all, being able to take a hot shower is quite nice after being out in chilly weather all day, and that’s not even considering the other uses that water heaters have, such as with appliances like dishwashers. If you want your water heater to function properly, however, you’ll need to take good care of it. Here are water heater maintenance tips that you’ll want to follow as we head into the fall season.
Drain and Flush Your System
Does your home have hard water? The bottom area of your water heater tank can fill up with sediment from minerals over time. This results in your system not running as efficiently. That’s why you should drain your tank and clear out those minerals.
Before you start draining your tank, you’ll first want to turn off your water heater’s power source. After that, turn off the cold water supply valve. Get a hose and attach it to your drain valve, and then open up every hot water faucet throughout your house. Let those faucets run for a little bit so you can dispense the hot water from your system.
Lastly, open up the drainage valve of your water heater and empty out your tank. Once it’s empty, turn your cold water supply on and keep it running for roughly ten minutes. This way, clean water can run through your system and remove any sediment buildup you have.
Test Out Your Pressure Relief Valve
If your pressure relief valve is working, then it should send a burst of hot water in your drainpipe once you raise, then lower, your test lever. It’s important to get this done frequently so that you can monitor the pressure and get rid of debris, when needed. If your pressure relief valve doesn’t let out large bursts of hot water, it’s best to get a professional plumber to help you out.
