Keeping your plumbing in good condition can add up. By saving money on your plumbing, you’ll have more money to spend on your family for trips and other fun activities now that the warmer weather has returned. Even with that in mind, you shouldn’t skimp. Here are some ways to save money in a sensible way.
In the Bathroom and Kitchen
Take the time to walk through your house and attempt to identify any problem areas. These spots will need more attention than other places in the house. Two such places are the bathroom and the kitchen. Start by testing all of the faucets. You can look for leaks and drips that cost you money and grate on your nerves. Then look for leaks in and around your toilet. Turn the water supply valves attached to sinks and toilets to repel rust, mineral buildups, and caulk that has hardened. Add drain strainers to make sure that dirt, hair, and soap residue don’t clog up the drains, too.
For Heaters and Appliances
With that done, it’s time to move on. Check on the heaters and other appliances in your home. Although you’ll need to rely on air conditioning more and more as summer approaches, that doesn’t mean your heater is completely useless. Drain water to get rid of sediment buildup that you find underneath it. Look at the temperature setting on the water heater and make sure it doesn’t go above 120 degrees for safety reasons. If the heater is somewhere between 1o and 15 years old, it is time to replace it.
After you’ve done that, look at the washing machine and dishwasher and make sure they aren’t leaking. Clean out the lint trap in your washing machine and in the dryer, too. Then, if your air conditioner isn’t working the way you want it to, get a tuneup or a replacement so you won’t be suffering when scorching summer temperatures return.
Everything Else
Here are a few final tips to try out. Look at your garden hose for any signs of cracks or leaks, especially if you haven’t used it yet this season. Make sure the sump pump works, and then test the water supply valves to double check that it won’t stick.
