Do you have a toilet at home that just seems to run constantly? Not only is this an inconvenience to experience around your home, but it can also negatively affect your water bill. As such, it’s good to get to the source of this problem as quickly as possible so it can be resolved. Here are some possible reasons for a toilet to keep running.
The Flapper is Worn Down or Misaligned
In many situations, the reason for a constantly-running toilet is because the flapper has been either misaligned or worn out. The flapper regulates how water flows to the bowl. Without a properly-sealed flapper, water will flow continuously, and the toilet won’t be able to stop running. This is one of the most common reasons for toilets to run constantly.
The Flapper Chain is Damaged
The flapper chain is used to connect the flapper valve to the flush handle. When this chain is damaged, the flapper might not close properly. This results in water leaking from your tank, and into the toilet bowl. A broken chain can result in the flapper being slightly open all of the time. This causes water to keep flowing, which is why you need to check your flapper chain regularly to determine whether or not it requires repairs or needs to be replaced.
The Fill Valve is Faulty
A faulty fill valve is another common culprit for running toilets. The fill valve helps to control the water level inside of your tank. If something happens to this valve, water can continuously fill the tank, or the tank might not get filled enough. This can cause running water to cycle constantly.
Problems With Your Float Ball
The float ball is a mechanism that shuts the fill valve off after the tank gets to a certain water level. Sometimes, however, this float ball can get damaged, or simply not adjusted properly. In situations such as these, the tank might not fill up as it should. This will cause the toilet to continue running.
