A bothersome problem your home can face is when drains get clogged. It’s best to prevent this problem, whenever possible. To do this, you’ll need to know what causes drains to get clogged up in the first place. Here are reasons why your home can get clogged drains. By knowing these causes ahead of time, you can take precautions to prevent them from happening.
Soap & Hair Buildup
Hair and soap are often the catalysts for drain clogging in the bathroom. When hair goes down the bathroom drain, it can sometimes get tangled up and then mix with soap and other products. This creates a sticky bundle that can easily block the flow of water if the blockage is large enough.
Soap can also clog drains on its own. This is because soap can create an adhesive coating along the edges of your pipes, which traps various types of debris. Eventually, enough debris will get caught to cause clogging.
Food Waste
This is a way for clogged drains to occur in the kitchen as opposed to the bathroom. When food waste is washed down your drains, it’s possible for food particles to pile up over time. With enough food particles filling up your drains, a big clog can happen. If you want to prevent this from occurring, you should scrape food waste from your plate and put it into your trash instead of sending it down your drains.
Fat, Oil, and Grease
While fat, oil, and grease may start out as liquids when you pour them down your kitchen drains, they will eventually solidify. Once this happens, these hardened substances will create a blockage in your pipes. For this reason, it’s best to not pour these into your drains. Instead, give them time to cool. Eventually, they will solidify, and then you can throw them into your trash. For residual grease and oil on your dishes, wipe everything off with paper towels, and then throw those paper towels into the trash as well.
