The mild fall and pre-winter weather have treated us well, leaving some of us concerned for how the harsh winter months might unfold. Be sure to prepare for constant below-freezing temperatures we will incur in the coming season. Home plumbing issues are often overlooked as necessary to equip a home for freezing temperatures, leading to damage and stress.

Turn off outside water.

Locate and turn off the water that sources the outside of the home. Drain these pipes and access points that are likely to be subjected to freezing temperatures. Excess moisture left in these areas can lead to frozen and burst pipes.

Winterize hose bibs

There is no need to winterize all outside hose bibs. If you’re unsure, check with an expert to know for sure and for the future. If you live near the water, determine the need to check and clear pier lines. Remove the garden hose and drain it thoroughly and store it inside. Be sure there is not a leak in the hose bib and turn the water supply off that runs outside. Any water left behind can cause damage to the pipe or the hose bib. Another layer of protection is installing a frost-free faucet for the winter months.

Avoid frozen pipes

Determine what pipes are likely to freeze in basements or unheated areas of the home. Consider insulating pipes in these areas. Empty water lines, add antifreeze if necessary to prevent damage. In some cases, you may need a professional to get the job done.
