Pipe corrosion is one of the primary reasons for plumbing leaks to happen. Over a couple of decades, as water continues to flow through the pipes, the pipe metal will eventually get worn down, resulting in these leaks. Identifying corrosion is key for preventing plumbing leaks. We’ve already discussed some signs of pipe corrosion in the past, but there are other signs to keep in mind as well. Here are more signs that your pipes are corroding.
Water Quality Goes Down
Something you’ll likely begin to notice is that the taste of the water isn’t the same. When your pipes are corroded, the water will start to have more of a metallic taste to it, at least if the pipes are made from copper. If you have old lead pipes, the water might have a sweeter taste. In either case, unusual-tasting water is usually indicative of pipe corrosion.
Water Temperature Starts Fluctuating
Whenever your pipes are corroded, the water in your home can suddenly have changes in temperature. It can be warm in one moment, cold in the next, then back to warm again. This can affect various aspects of life, such as taking a shower or getting the dishes washed. Typically, if you have steel pipes, hot water will cause corrosion more quickly than using cold water.
Your Pipes Keep Getting Clogged
Pipe corrosion, combined with a buildup in mineral deposits, can eventually cause your water lines to get clogged up. A clog can result in frequent blockages due to the pipeways becoming more narrow. If you think there’s a clog in your piping, you’ll want to get them professionally inspected.
There’s Visible Corrosion On Your Pipes
Naturally, the most effective way to identify pipe corrosion is when it’s in plain sight. When pipes start corroding, they may have more of a bluish-green look. Sometimes, the color could be reddish-brown as well. These colors can appear as a result of oxidation on your pipes’ exteriors, and if the exterior of your pipes is corroded, there’s a good chance that the interior is corroded as well.
