It’s Time to Winterize Your Plumbing in Maryland

Shut off your outdoor water

The first step to winterizing your Maryland plumbing is to shut off the water that goes to your outdoor faucet. Usually this knob is not hard to find as it is somewhere along the inside wall or ceiling parallel to your outdoor spigot. Simply shut this off before freezing temperatures hit.

Drain and disconnect your hose

You’re not done yet! Once your water is shut off, be sure to remove your hose and store it for the winter. Then open the faucet and let it drain until no more water is expelled so you know the system is empty. This is a crucial aspect of winterizing your Maryland plumbing as water that is stored inside the faucet can easily cause your spigot to burst which can quickly lead to indoor plumbing problems. If your faucet continues to drip even after you have turned off the interior shut-off valve, it means that your valve is bad so you should call your Maryland plumber to have it replaced.

What if I have a frost-free faucet?

Frost-free faucets must be disconnected from your hose before the first frost. These faucets do not always have indoor shut off valves so it is especially important to disconnect your hose so that any water trapped inside can be drained.
