It can be a tough situation if you ever experience a water heater leak. It’s important to take the right steps in order to minimize the damage that the leak causes, while also keeping you safe. Keep reading as we go over the steps you should follow in order to respond to a water heater leak.
Find the Source of the Leak
In many cases, a water heater leak will come from either the tank, the drain valve, or the pressure relief valve. It’s critical that you correctly identify the source of the problem. Sometimes, it’s not easy to tell where the leak’s origin is. In this case, you’ll want to proceed to the next step:
Turn Your Water Supply Off
A leak can’t cause as much damage if you prevent more water from entering the heater tank. By turning off your water supply, you stop the flow of water to your tank, which prevents additional water from being leaked while you identify the source of the problem.
Drain Your Tank
You don’t want water leaking onto the ground and causing additional damage to your home. That’s why you should take a hose and attach it to your drain valve, which is located at the base of the water heater. This will allow you to redirect the water to an area where damage won’t be caused, such as a floor drain or a container with leak protection.
Assess How Severe the Leak Is
How big is the leak in your water heater? If you’re only experiencing small drips or valve problems, you might be able to repair it. In worse scenarios, such as leaking from the tank itself, you’ll likely need to replace your entire water heater in order to get your home back to normal.
