How to Prevent Frozen Drain Pipes

How to Prevent Frozen Drain Pipes
Here is what you can do to prevent freezing drain pipes around your home.

Since we’re still in the winter season, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop drastically, sometimes to the point of being below freezing. When we get beneath freezing temperatures, your home’s plumbing system can face significant repercussions. More specifically, your drain pipes can start freezing over, so you want to do what you can to prevent this phenomenon from happening. Here is what you can do to prevent freezing drain pipes around your home.

Watch for Low Water Pressure From Your Faucets

A sign that your drain pipes could be freezing over is when your faucets have low water pressure coming from them. That’s why you should pay attention to how strong the water pressure is in your pipes. The sooner you can detect this issue, the easier it will be to prevent pipe freezing from happening altogether.

Leave Faucets Dripping

Your home’s piping system will have some external pipes that are exposed to the weather at all times. Some faucets around your house receive water from your external pipes. Once you know which faucets those are, you’ll want to make sure those faucets are left dripping. While it seems like it can waste water, it’s an effective method for keeping water flowing throughout your drain pipes. Once water stops moving, that’s when it’s more likely for your pipes to freeze.

Add Insulation to Your Drain Pipes

Your pipes will be exposed to cold weather all throughout the winter season If you want to stop your drain pipes from freezing, you’ll need to keep them warm. By adding insulation to your drain pipes, you can stop the water inside them from freezing. Take a look at the water supply lines that are kept in unheated parts of your home. You’ll want to insulate those areas so they get the extra heat they need to avoid freezing.
