Help! I Don’t Know What to Do About My High Water Bill!

A high water bill is always troubling. When it goes down, that’s a relief. But when it steadily goes up, you’re going to feel anxious. And when it skyrockets, it’s easy to panic. Is it possible to start bringing it back down? Of course, it is! You just have to be smart about water conservation. You’ll be doing your part for the environment, and your wallet will thank you, too!

Sniffing Out Those Treacherous Leaks

Leaks are insidious. And the biggest problem with them is that they are often hard to find. Sometimes, you won’t even be able to hear them (unless you’re trying to fall asleep, that is). For this reason, you’ll want the assistance of a master plumber on your side. While it’s easy to think that leaks originate from worn-out pipes, that isn’t always the case. Sink faucets, toilets, and water heaters can also leak. Aging appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines can spring a leak.

Sometimes, you can fix the source of the water leak on your own. You can grab a repair kit from your local hardware store. That might not be enough, though. Faulty pipes and other hidden plumbing issues could be the real culprit behind your astronomical water bill.

How to Interpret Your Water Usage Meter

Understanding the meter is a critical part of water conservation. Reading it helps you bring the rapidly-inflating water bill back under control. Older water meters, in particular, tend to be erratic and unreliable. But if you’re able to prove that your bill is wrong due to the meter’s inaccuracy, you could be eligible for a full refund. Even if this isn’t possible, another method for decreasing your water costs is simple. Replace the current meter with a new model, and see if that helps reverse such a troubling trend.

Save More Water Along the Way

Rethink the ways you use your water. Maybe spend less time in the shower? Wasting water also comes in other unexpected ways. For instance, don’t run the laundry until you’ve got a full load. And if something is wrong with your toilet (ghost flushes, perhaps?), get it fixed right away. That’s another service that expert plumbers can provide you with; all you have to do is let them know they are needed!
