There are more drains in your home than you might think. Here’s a guide to dealing with all the different possible drain problems in your home this spring.

There are more drains in your home than you might think. Take a minute to imagine what it would be like if they all blocked or backed-up at the same time. It would be a sanitary nightmare, for one thing. Here’s a guide to dealing with all the different possible drain problems in your home this spring.

The Bathroom Sink

One of the trouble spots is bound to be the bathroom sink. With everyone using it when they need to brush their teeth, wash their hands, or take care of basic grooming tasks, it’s no surprise that the drain in the sink will get clogged. Soap, toothpaste, and hair are all getting caught down there. This will mean that the water won’t flow as easily, and it can lead to nasty backups that can cause even more problems. A plunger can help you deal with drain problems here, although you can also try a mixture of baking soda, white vinegar, and boiling water.

For Tubs and Showers

Keeping your bathtubs and shower drains clean is also important. More soap, hair, and shampoo residue will build up in these drains, so you need to be vigilant and do what you can to prevent clogs and backups. One suggestion is to pour boiling water down the drain and then using the plunger to relieve the blockage. If that doesn’t work, then you’ll need help from plumbing professionals.

In the Kitchen

The kitchen sink can also get clogged, especially if you tend to pour fats, oils, and greases down the drain instead of in the trash. Boiling water, vinegar, and baking soda can also help here; that’s because you shouldn’t use chemical drain cleaners unless you feel you have no choice. Once you’ve tried that and the drain has gone away, don’t put coffee grinds, bones, eggshells, papers, and fruit peels down the drain in the kitchen sink. You’ll just be begging for this problem to come back.

Tackling the Toilet

Dealing with the toilet can be disgusting. There’s no way around that. Keeping your toilet clean can stop drains and blockages, especially if you have kids who enjoy flushing their toys or goldfish down the toilet just to see them swim. Use the plunger before anything else. Unfortunately, that won’t always work. If you don’t have a maintenance crew on call, then it’s time to get in touch with plumbers you can trust.
