Sump pumps aren’t only important in the rainy season. In the winter months, they work just as hard keeping basements dry from rain and melting snow. Having the right size sump pump can make a difference in the efficacy of water drainage in your home.
All Pumps are Not Equal
When deciding which sump pump to choose, remember there are a few things to keep in mind. Be aware of the depth of the pit, the horsepower and model of the pump, the pipe specifics, and the presence of leaks. Bigger is not always better and each home has a different set of requirements, therefore, needs a different pump. Finding the best pump will save you money in the long run.
The Best Pump for Your Home
Pumps that push water out of your basement as fast as possible with the most power are not the best option. They are not efficient and can cost a great deal of money in the long run as well as need to be replaced much quicker than necessary due to overworking. Always take into consideration the pump already in your home. On the sump pump will be a data plate. Stick with the same horsepower that is already being used.
Pump Horsepower
The horsepower your sump pump requires depends on the piping route and volume of water. 1/3 horsepower submersible pumps are for homes with the average water table, the pipe running 3 to 25 feet with 7 to 10 feet vertical lift, and one 90-degree elbow. 1/2 horsepower submersible pumps can handle up to 40 percent more water and have the same specs as 1/3 horsepower pumps. 3/4 horsepower submersible pumps can do 25 percent more than 1/2 horsepower pumps. These are best for homes in a floodplain, deep basements, longer piping, or outdoor piping.
