How to Tell Your Sump Pump Needs Repairs

How to Tell Your Sump Pump Needs Repairs

Find out how to tell that your sump pump is in need of repairs.

When it comes to plumbing problems, it’s best when you’re able to identify and address them as quickly as you notice them. The sooner you deal with these problems, the less time they’ll have to grow and become bigger issues down the road. The same is true for issues with your sump pump. You’ll want to know the moment when it needs repairs, but how will you be able to tell? Find out how to tell that your sump pump is in need of repairs.

You Start Hearing Odd Noises

Sump pumps don’t usually make much noise, with the only exception being a low constant humming sound. If you start to hear louder noises that seem out of the ordinary, your sump pump could need to get fixed up. Grinding/rattling sounds are indicative of problems with your fan or impeller.

Your Sump Pump Won’t Turn On

If your pump isn’t turning on, there are a few reasons why this could be the case. Sometimes, it’s a more simple problem, like untangling your float switch from your sump basin. Sometimes, sump pumps have their float switches supported by brackets, and these brackets can break. If you have any other issue, you may need to replace your pump entirely.

The Sump Pump is Constantly Running

Your sump pump shouldn’t be constantly running, as it can indicate all sorts of problems. You could have a faulty switch, or your pump might not be strong enough to handle the water it’s gathered.

Typically, when your pump won’t stop running, it’s because you have a problem with your switch, and this is a problem that can be repaired without too much difficulty. If your pump is too small, however, you’ll have to get it replaced with a larger one.
