Normally, a toilet will stop running shortly after it’s been flushed. In some cases, however, it might continue to run long after you’ve finished using it. So, what are the potential causes for this problem? Find out why your toilet might keep running continuously.
The Handle is Stuck
Sometimes, the toilet handle can get jammed, and when it does, this can result in the toilet continuously running. Fortunately, this is typically one of the easier problems to resolve. To fix this issue, you’ll have to first find the handle rod/lever, which will be connected to the tank. By pulling up and down on this lever a couple of times, you’ll usually be able to get the handle unstuck. If this doesn’t work, the handle might need replacing.
The Toilet’s Float is Too High
The float is a component that tells your toilet how full it currently is. You’ll know the float is too high if the float ball is either slightly above water level, or if it has gone all the way up. To resolve this issue, adjust the float ball so that it’s lower. There may be an adjustment screw that will let you make the necessary adjustments. It may take a couple of tweaks to get your float at the right level, so give it a few tries before deciding whether or not it’s the source of your issue.
You Need to Replace Your Flapper
The flapper is the component that controls water flow for your toilet’s tank. Once the toilet is flushed, the flapper closes so that water isn’t able to come back through your toilet’s drain and bowl. If this flapper doesn’t close entirely, it could be due to the flapper being old. Typically, a flapper will need to get replaced every 5-8 years. If your flapper is around this age, consider getting a new one.
