Why Your Toilet Isn’t Flushing

Why Your Toilet Isn’t Flushing
Here are some of the reasons a toilet might not be flushing properly.

Is your toilet flushing as it should? If not, don’t panic. It’s very common for homeowners to have issues flushing their toilets from time to time. There are many reasons why your toilets might not be flushing, so it can be a little tricky deciphering the issue, but knowing the potential causes will make resolving the problem easier for you. Here are some of the reasons a toilet might not be flushing properly.

You Have a Clog

This is a common reason for toilet-flushing issues, but while it can be easy to know you have a clog, it’s not always easy to tell what’s obstructing your pipes. Smaller items, like toilet paper, feminine care items, or tiny toys, should be handled with a plunger. For larger blockages, however, it might be better to call a professional plumber to come handle the clog for you.

Your Tank Doesn’t Have Enough Water

Whenever you flush your toilet, there should be a sound that indicates your tank is being filled with water. If this sound doesn’t happen, it means your tank isn’t getting the water it needs for flushing. This could mean that your flush valve isn’t turned on, and if that’s the case, simply twist the valve back on to resolve the issue.

You Have a Damaged Flapper

The flapper is made of rubber, and its purpose is to open the intake hole so that water from your tank is able to flush whatever is in your toilet down the drain, then seal the hole back up again. If this flapper gets bent or warped in some way, your toilet will start “filling up” continuously. A damaged flapper will prevent the intake hole from being properly sealed. As a result, your tank can never fill, which by extension, prevents your toilet from flushing properly. To resolve the issue, simply replace your flapper with a new one.
