Spigot Replacement: 5 Telltale Signs You Need One

Over time, especially in areas with large temperature extremes, spigots can develop cracks.

In our area, fall is a favorite time of year for many, because it ushers in a welcome break from several intense months of heat and humidity. However, that break is often short-lived, as we usually get another small blast of heat before the summer weather is truly gone. For newcomers, this “false fall” can lull them into a false sense of security as they put away all of the summer accouterments of home ownership.  One fall task that many jump to too early is winterizing their spigots and turning off the water. If you’re considering tackling that task this weekend, consider instead making sure that you do not need a spigot replacement first, and holding off just in case you might need to water or wash something on your property in the next few beautiful weeks. Read on for five signs that you need a spigot replacement.

Weird Flow Or Pressure

When the spigot is on, if the flow is inconsistent, weirdly slow or fast (the water pressure is too low or too high) flow, or it spurts, sputters, or comes out at weird angles, it’s a sign that there is an issue with the spigot. The best course of action is to get a spigot replacement by one of our professionals.

Visible Damage

Over time, especially in areas with large temperature extremes, spigots can develop cracks. These often start as super small, hairline cracks, and they can be easy to miss. Make sure that you are doing a thorough visually inspection of your spigot every few months to make sure that it isn’t damaged.

Loose (And/Or Squeaky) Handles

Like any other tool, spigots will wear down with use and time, and one of the most obvious signs of this is squeaking when you turn the handle. This is caused by the threads at the step wearing out and eventually the handle will also start to feel loose when you turn it.

Drips Or Leaks

Perhaps the biggest and most obvious sign of a problem (except perhaps if the spigot doesn’t work at all) is if it drips or leaks after you turn it off. Once you turn off the spigot, the water should stop. If it doesn’t stop completely, you’re wasting water and money every single day.

Build-Up

If you can see rust or mineral deposits (like calcium or lime) building up in or around your spigot, this is usually a sign that something internally is damaged or worn out, usually the protective coating on the metal components. While this might seem cosmetic, it can also be a health and safety concern, especially if you have kids or pets who drink from the hose (or if you like to relive your childhood and do so yourself).
