A kitchen is incomplete without garbage disposals. The problem is, it’s so common that you probably take it for granted. There are many substances, such as fats, oils, and grease, that don’t belong in your sink drain. Here are some of the things that could make your garbage disposal stop working or act up in other ways.
The Way It Works
Most of the time, you more than likely drop something down the drain, run the garbage disposal, and then move on with your life. But it’s worth it to learn more about how it is supposed to work. That way, you’ll be able to describe to your plumber what is wrong with it and expedite the process of repairs. Every garbage disposal has a grinding chamber, where the blades can be found. Then a component called the impeller arm works with the plate to shove the food particulates and slimy liquids down into the drain. Ready for a surprise? The dishwasher also works as a team with the disposal. Some of the water gets rerouted through it to help the drain swallow larger chunks of leftover food and other detritus.
No Noise
You might not always be able to tell when something is wrong. If you can run your disposal, but you don’t hear it make any sound, then it might be broken or otherwise disabled. For instance, it could have come unplugged somehow. Then make sure that the wires aren’t frayed or worn out. Try resetting the entire unit. If that doesn’t seem to make a difference, then it’s time to move onto the last resort. At this point, you will need to consult a plumber for how to get it replaced. Don’t try to do it by yourself.
Leaks
Another problem is when it starts to leak. When you notice this issue, it means something needs a new coat of sealant. That’s why, even when you try to make small fixes, it might not be enough and you’ll need help from a licensed plumber.
Draining Too Slowly
Garbage disposals are supposed to drain when you’re done with them. If they drain too slowly, then it can cause a disaster when it’s time to wash the dishes! This is a sign that there’s a clog somewhere. Break it up with vinegar and baking soda before you reach for the chemical drain cleaners!
